Abe Lincoln

“You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich...strengthen the weak by weakening the strong...bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift...lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down...build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence...help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." -Abraham Lincoln

What is it Wednesday

These are some of the dishes my Grandmother collected during the Depression of 1930.  Because of the depression not many would go to the movie theaters, so they started giving out dishes to get people to come in.  Around here Wednesday was dish night, and for a nickel you could see the news reel of what was going on in the world, get a dish, and see a movie.  During the summer it was a better treat, the movie theaters where air conditioned!  Today we hide in our homes with our air conditioner, and cable TV.  Do you remember your mothers collecting glasses from laundry soap, or maybe a new towel?  Do you have some of your Grandmothers dishes from dish night?  Let me know, and lets share some stories.  Have a great weekend.

Great story! Love the history behind your dishes. My grandmother used to collect glasses and dishes from Duz laundry soap. I would love to go back to those simple times. Sigh!

My mother-in-law received a beautiful set of dishes from her Secret Sister at church in the 1950's. She would receive 1-2 pieces at a time. The pattern is called Louisa or Floragold. My husband and I have the set of dishes at our home. My husband said it was meant for us to have the dishes as my middle name is Louisa and I have a passion for old glassware.
