What is it Wednesday

Welcome to another What is it Wednesday.  Today I have a metal lunch box, and a lunch pail.  The one on the right is called a lunch pail, and the one on the left a lunch box.  Both where used my school children to carry their lunches to school.  The lunch box on the left is by The American Thermos Bottle Company, from Norwich, Conn., USA.  This lunch box was made before 1963, and the Post Office changing the State abbreviation for zip codes. The one on the right is unknown.  The pail was used by school children, and looks like a  miner lunch pail.  Sandwiches where made from homemade bread wrapped up in wax paper, with fruit, and a cookie.  No ice packs, no worries about spoiled lunches.  What happened?  If you did not take a lunch to school, and your school offer a lunch program you could also purchase your lunch for about a nickel.  Check out The Food Timeline for a quick history on school lunches, http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodschools.html#aboutlunch.  Lunch pails where made in the USA by Thermos Company, now they come from China.  No ice packs, no plastic bags, no prepackaged food, you had a sandwiches from what was dinner the night before.  If you where lucky enough to buy your lunch, it was made in the school by ladies who showed up early in the morning, and cooked the food.  Today the food comes in prepackaged, and heated up or fried.  The ladies who cooked out hunch made sure we ate good food, and a well balanced diet.  Today the government is in charged of breakfast and lunch, and the children are now over weight, and under nourished.  What happened?  My favorite lunch box (metal) had the Jetson's on it (one of my favorite shows growing up), what was your favorite lunch box.

What is it Wednesday

Welcome to another what is it Wednesday.  Today I have for you a Borden's Glass churn jar.  The date on the bottom is March 30, 1915.  Glass churn jars where used for making butter, beating eggs, or making whipping cream to go on some home made pie.  This one has wire beaters, some have wooden beaters.  Daisy, Borden's and Sears sold these to home makers.  Our grandmothers or great grandmothers use items like this everyday.  Today we run to the grocery store and buy butter, and whip topping.

Remember I having a giveaway so if you have not already signed up, please do so.  Good luck to everyone.

What is it Wednesday

Yes I'm a day late!  Yesterday just got away from me!  With that said and my need for coffee (LOL).  I have two examples of coffee grinders.  Both where used to grind coffee beans.  Before you could perk your coffee (no coffee makers, with timers), you first had to grind your coffee beans.  The top one has a drawer to catch the ground beans, the one on the bottom , would fall into a container, or you could hold the container under it.  My sons used to love to sit and grind coffee beans for me.  They would take turns holding the container while the other one turned the handle.  Lot's of fun in the morning!

In 1900 the one on the top would have cost you $0.49 and the one on the bottom $0.20.  Now we spend over a $1.00 for a cup of coffee.  How things have changed.  We purchase our coffee ground in a plastic container, have a coffee maker with a timer, so we can have our coffee ready first thing in the morning.  This part of the modern world I love, but I also think we need to go back to a simpler time, at least  once in a while.  Have a great day, and enjoy a cup of coffee, and think of your grandmother or great grandmother grinding coffee beans.
