What is it Wednesday

Welcome to another what is it Wednesday.  The item on your left is an old plow, pulled by man, horse, or mule.  The item on the right is a tiller, pushed by mankind.  Great tools to use in a garden.  We are all getting our garden ready for planting (and yes some of you have yours in already).  In the 1900 Sears catalog the plow would cost between $9.95 to 12.95 new.  I could not find a price for the tiller.  Both are made from iron and wood, and in the USA.  So when you work in your garden, remember how it done 50 to 100 years ago. Then enjoy                                             your gas power tiller, and  how easy it is to use.

Good morning and welcome to Monday Market with the Old Farmhouse Gathering Team.  This week I have found three more shops for you to check out.  The first shop is For the birds and more, where Duke makes bird houses.  Southern prim in style, all handmade by him in is workshop.  The next stop is a Primthyme, where Gail makes banners, hang tags, and printable s.  The last shop today is By way of Salem, where Jeannine make ooak Christmas and Halloween items.  Most taking up to two weeks to make.  Stop by all three shops, and have a look, remember we have Mothers Day coming up, along with bridal showers, and graduations.  So do some shopping with Made in the USA products.  You will find their Etsy shops to the right of this posting, click on the Etsy mini and you will go to their shops for a better viewing of the wonderful talent I have found for you today.

What is it Wednesday

Welcome to another what is it Wednesday!  Today we are looking at some items to help you do laundry.  Starting on the left side of the picture the glass bottle (that has a blue tint) where for bluing.  Bluing was added to the rise water to help your whites look there whitest  The two tall brown glass bottles where for Clorox bleach.  Next to them are the small brown bottle that held Lysol. All of these bottle would have used a cork stopper.  You had to be very careful that you did not spill anything.   The metal square item is for grating soap.  All small pieces of soap where used in washing clothes.  .Our grandmother and great grandmothers did not waste a small piece of soap.  The glass bottle where made in the USA, along with the product.  Today we use plastic bottles, that somehow end up in a land fill.  Glass bottles where reused after being clean out.  Broken glass was put down a rat hole, or another bury animal to keep them out of your home.  They would get cut, and just leave.  No poison just broken glass. Monday Market with Old Farmhouse Gathering

Good morning, I hope everyone had a wonderful week, and enjoyed some spring weather.  Today I have three more wonderful shops from the Old Farmhouse Gathering Team for you to look at.  So get something good to drink and come visit with me.  The first shop is Nannie Bears.  You will find handmade mohair bears, something wonderful to place inside a Easter Basket.  The next shop is a team made up of two talented Old Farmhouse Group members, who combined their talents.  Paint and Sew is the talent of Bette and Deena  they have e-patterns, print and sew on fabrics.  You can make some altered art recycle jean pockets, to fabric hang tags.  You could have a lot of fun making something using you printer, and some fabric.  The last shop is Amelia's Parlor.  This shop has primitive candle sticks, candle sconces, e-patters and hang tags.  Amelia's shop is new to Etsy and the Old Farmhouse Group, so stop by and give a big heart.  Type in OFG into the search bar on Etsy, and find great items to add to an Easter Basket.

Dirtroadteam on Etsy - Cottontailquilts

Good morning!  I am so happy to tell you that I'm part of the Dirt Road Team on Etsy.  This team is all about living in a small town, and off the beaten path.  So get something wonderful to drink and come visit this group, and the shop I have featured today.  Cottontailquilts is the shop I would love for to stop at today.  If you love quilts, this is the shop.  Grab a napkin for the drool you will have.  Quilts hand quilted from crib size to queen, and some of crib size can be personalized for the new addition to the family.  She also has fabric art, clothing to grow into, and fabric sculptures.  My personal favorite is the Wild Flowers of Michigan.  We both live in the mitten state. YEA!  When you are done drooling over the quilts, type Dirtroadteam into the search bar of Etsy, and fine some more wonderful shops.  The dirt roads in life take us to places very few have traveled.  Enjoy!

Handwoven basket with a round masher for a handle.  The masher is woven into the bottom of the basket.  Great addition to a kitchen, or can be used has a gift basket. 

What is it Wednesday

I love old things, and every time I come home with something new to me, I would hear "what's that"!  So I am starting something new, and please let me know if you have something like this, or a story to share.  I would love to pass on the knowledge I have and that you have to the next generation.    So this week it is about cleaning rugs, before everyone had wall to wall carpet.  The first item is a rug beater.  Each week you would take out your throw rugs hand them over the clothes line, and beat them with this beater.  You would get the dust and dirt of them, but each spring and fall the large area rugs would come out and those would also get a good beating and airing out.  

 

In 1909 Fred Wardell, started the Eureka Vacuum cleaner company, in Detroit, Michigan.  I'm not sure of the exact date of the one of have, but have they come a long way.  The old vacuum does have attachment, but I can not figure out how they go on.  I did plug it in once, and what a noise it made.  I think more dust came out of it then went in it.  No HEPA filter back then.  

Sad to said that in 1909 it was made in the USA, now in China.  Once made from fabric and metal, to all plastic.  What will the next 100 years bring?

To the long gray line, that has given this country great leaders, continue to do so.  Who the next great leaders are time will tell.

A Simple Life Magazine

Today I received my first copy of A Simple Life Magazine.  What a wonderful magazine.  If you are into primitive homes, living, and the old ways please check this magazine out.   Eye candy for those who enjoy this way of living, or just dream of it.  Some of us have to live with bigger then life TV, and sports show of some kind.  My favorite stores from this issue are A settlement of Pioneer cabins from Michigan, and the story of Dollie Turnbill, and her basket.  Baskets are a very big part of my life, and I am so happy that Dollies basket found a good and loving place in the Museum of Appalachia.  It is a good day when you read of people taking care of our past, and pass they knowledge on to the next generation.

Monday Market with Old Farmhouse Gathering

Good morning!  I hope everyone had a good weekend.  We had rain, but not like some folks. So get something good to drink and visit the three shops I have found for you today.  The first shop belongs to Allison of Simon's Country Candles.  Allison makes candles that look like food!  You will find blueberry, strawberry cheesecake, milkshakes, cupcakes, pies, and bread.  All with no calories, just some wonderful smells. The next stop is with Beth, from Raggedy Angels.  Beth makes room and linen spray.  Wonderful scents, with vintage looking labels.  The last shop belongs to Dawn of Pip Berry Tree.  Dawn makes soap, painted wooden words, painted slate, and dolls.  Please read her profile, for each doll that she sells a percentage goes to the German Shepard Rescue.  All three shops have something that smell wonderful, and would make a great addition to your home, or for a gift.  With graduation and wedding showers just around the corner, these would be wonderful gifts to receive.

Applogy for a listing on Monday

I'm hear to say I'm sorry. On Monday's I feature three shops from the Old Farmhouse Group, I have just found that one of them does not make what they are selling.  I think the shop I had listed was handmade, but they have another shop with buy sell items.  My blog is to help those who sit at the kitchen table, corner of a bedroom, down the basement working on the items they love to create.  Those who work long hours, because they love what they are doing, not after the fast buck, just a love of their art.  I have removed the shop, and what I have written about them from the post.  I am really sorry that the wool was over my eyes, and they are getting away with this.  If anyone who reads this and see that something is not handmade please please let me know.  I do have shops from my sisters in Canada, and these ladies work long and hard on their art.  My blog is for those who take the time to make something from nothing, and not from a wholesale catalog.  Etsy and Artfire are a place for those of us who take the time to make something.  Both have a policy of handmade only, but there are some who cheat and think they can a way with it.

Monday Market with Old Farmhouse Gathering

Welcome to Monday and the first day of March.  Spring is just around the corner, and with all of the snow, we all could use a little warmer weather.  I have found three more shops from the Old Farmhouse Group for you to look at today.  The first shops belongs to Vickie from Crows Ridge Hollow.  Vickie is a very talented painter, and does a lot of custom work, so if you would like something special for your home please contact her.  She paints for all season, and you find something for the spring season.  The next shop is Mamaws Creations, where Marie hand sews dolls.  Marie also has e patterns for you, and some doll blanks so you can make your own.  If you are thinking of making a doll, great way to start.  The last shop is another Marie from Primitive Season.  You will find felted Easter eggs, wooden bunnies, and some wooden birds.  Three shop to get you started on your spring decorating.
